1957 Gibson Explorer Headstock template and Kluson Tuners! Not a replica, relic or reproduction, this is the real deal from 1957-1958. Consider an original Explorer can sell for well over $600,000.00 the parts specific to the Korina Explorer are just as rare and extremely sought after by collectors that are lucky enough to own one of these iconic instruments. I purchased this from a Long time Gibson dealer; this is what he told me about it:  “This has been in my desk since the late 80’s, I received it from Ward the parts manger at the Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, it was in his desk for many years. This is the Original headstock template for the late 50’s Gibson Korina Explorer, it dates to 1957.” The Template is made of mahogany, the Gibson logo in the Hollly veneer is missing, I assume Ward being a parts man, removed for a customer, who knows.  It has the original, first set of Gold, Kluson Deluxe, 6 inline, Pat. No, tulip tip tunes complete with bushings and screws. Only Korina Gibson Explorers came with these tuners, Between 20 to 28 have ever been produced. This is a once in a life time chance to buy an amazing piece of Gibson History!  The tuner tips are made of a degradable plastic that breaks down over time, the process has already begun on these. Untitled Document Item Details For your consideration is this vintage 1975 Gibson Explorer electric guitar. This particular pre-reissue, custom color example, serial number 627881, is in very excellent 100% original condition, and includes the original Gibson hard shell case! This extremely interesting and unbelievably rare guitar is unique for several reasons; 1) it pre-dates the Limited Edition '76 Explorer by several months, 2) it features a non-oval decal serial number, rather, it has a stamped in, early form, serial number, 3) is stamped "DEMO" under the pickguard, and 4) is finished in an original White finish! This guitar was purchased several years ago from a young man who claimed his dad was the original owner of both this and a '68 Gibson SG Standard, also in White. Your guess may be as good as mine with respect to "what this guitar is" and "why it is that way." One enthusiast who saw it a while ago claimed the contours looked more like that of an early-60's Korina Explorer that the more bold '76 Reissue. Perhaps it's a prototype, or maybe a custom order guitar made before the official re-release of the Explorer, either way, I don't know, and don't have evidence to prove it or suggest otherwise. This one-of-a-kind Gibson Explorer features: an all mahogany body with the original Polaris White finish, 1-piece mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, scimitar headstock design, (2) "Dirty Fingers" humbucking pickups, gold double line Gibson deluxe tuning machines, a Tune-O-Matic bridge and gold stop tailpiece, gold barrel knobs, gold hardware and the original hard shell case!The white finish is completely original, and it features the cool Gibson detail whereby finish is applied up over the fingerboard plank, with inverse black dots painted on for the fret markers.Aside from a very small hairline paint crack in the back of the body finish near the neck heal (pictured), there are no other structural or paint issues whatsoever. There is not weather-checking, no touch-ups, no breaks, no cracks, and no repairs.Perhaps the weirdest, most interesting might be a better adjective, part of the guitar is discovered only when inspecting closely, that is, when you look under the pickguard. Without doing so, the guitar is completely intact, perfect, and original, but there is clearly some interesting forensic evidence under the guard, which suggests it's a special or one-of-a-kind example. There is a "DEMO" stamp, as mentioned, with a strange symmetrical rout. Clearly not from an added pickup or anything aftermarket, rather, it looks to have been done during R&D style manufacturing. My best guess is that during this one-off production, new routs were considered, and executed, but Gibson decided to go forth with the one currently in the body, which is identical to that of the '76 Limited Edition reissue.The guitar plays and sounds great. The neck is large, but not as bulky as many '76-'77 Reissues. The frets are intact and playable. The gutiar sounds great. The guitar has amazing vibe overall, and is extremely attractive in all respects. I am selling my Gibson Reverse Explorer which is a limited edition Guitar of the Month from September 2008. It is one of only 1000 made - a real collectable. The guitar is in excellent condition throughout. The neck is straight and true and the truss rod works as it should. There is no fret wear. It is all original and comes with its fitted hard case, also in excellent condition. The electrics all work perfectly and the body has no buckle rash. The only marks I can find are a couple of nicks on the headstock - see pictures 3 and 4. The gold hardware shows no signs of tarnishing. I am not interested in any swaps. Happy for the guitar to be inspected and cash on collection is fine - but am happy to take paypal and post the guitar on - in a proper guitar box. The pickguard is made of the same material, in the shape of a lightning bolt, extending from one end of the body to the other. Each inlay is inserted into the fingerboard using a process that eliminates gaps and doesn’t require the use of fillers. Set-Neck Construction Like many of Gibson’s classic guitars, the neck and body on the new Reverse Explorer from Gibson USA are joined by using glue, in a process known as “set-neck construction.” This method ensures the elimination of air space in the neck cavity, and maximum or “wood-to-wood” contact between the neck and body, allowing them to function as a single unit. The result is better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks. Solid Mahogany Reverse Explorer Body The original Explorer body is already a striking example of Gibson ingenuity, but the body of the new Reverse Explorer from Gibson USA is even more creative. Turned upside down, the new Reverse Explorer is as striking as ever, and the body is still as balanced and comfortable to play as the original. The mahogany itself goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson’s woods, in addition to the same drying method to ensure a level of “equilibrium,” where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods’ machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson Reverse Explorer will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory. ’57 Classic and ’57 Classic Plus Pickups The ’57 Classic and ’57 Classic Plus pickups are the result of Gibson’s drive to capture and recreate the subtle variations of the legendary PAF humbuckers of the late 1950s and early 1960s. This renowned characteristic makes them the perfect choice for the new Reverse Explorer from Gibson USA. Introduced in 1992, the ’57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch. The ’57 Classic Plus is the perfect bridge-position companion to the ’57 Classic, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, two-conductor braided wiring. Instead of enamel-coated wiring, Gibson added poly-coated wiring—which improves consistency by eliminating thin or thick spots on the wire—and wax potting, which removes all internal air space and any chance of microphonic feedback. In the Reverse Explorer, the pickups’ pole pieces are concealed by covers that are copper-plated and powder-coated, giving them a tougher surface that stands up better to the wear and tear of everyday playing. Tune-O-Matic Bridge and Stopbar Tailpiece The Tune-o-matic bridge was the brainchild of legendary Gibson president Ted McCarty in 1954. At the time, it was a true revelation in intonation, and set a standard for simplicity and functionality that has never been bettered. This pioneering piece of hardware provides a firm seating for the strings, allowing the player to adjust and fine tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. It also yields a great union between the strings and body, which results in excellent tone and sustain. It is combined with a separate “stopbar” tailpiece, essentially a modified version of the earlier wraparound bridge. To this day, the Tune-o-matic remains the industry standard. It is the epitome of form and function in electric guitar bridge design, and is one of the most revered and copied pieces of guitar hardware ever developed. Antique Walnut and Nitrocellulose Finish The Antique Walnut finish on the new Reverse Explorer from Gibson USA is as rare as it is beautiful. Applying this unusual finish is one of the most labor-intensive elements of the guitar-making process. First goes the actual Walnut finish, then several evenly applied coats of nitrocellulose lacquer—all of which requires extensive man hours, and an exorbitant amount of drying time. The process results in a guitar that vibrates naturally, allowing for purer tone. The finish is also a softer finish, which makes it easily repairable. You can touch up a scratch or ding on a nitro finish, but you can’t do the same on a poly finish. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous in nature, and actually gets thinner over time. It does not “seal” wood in an airtight shell—as a poly finish does—and allows the wood to breathe and age properly.
