Gibson Explorer

The Gibson Explorer is a prime example of why you should never give up on something. Initially rolling out in 1958, the Explorer by Gibson Guitars was at first very unpopular, to the point where it had to be discontinued in 1959. Luckily, Gibson eventually realized the value of the guitar and re-issued it in 1976. Since then it has led a very successful run and has acquired much fame and respect in the guitar community.

Due to the startling boom in popularity of the Gibson Explorer, Gibson had to issue a large number of variations on the Explorer, many of which became popular in their own independent ways. However, the original Gibson Explorer is usually the preferred model, due to its superior sound and characteristics. One of the most unique and striking characteristics of the Gibson Explorer is its oddly shaped body, which although might look slightly abnormal, provides one of the best fits for guitar players and allows for better grip on the instrument. Another unique feature of the Gibson Explorer is its Tune-O-Matic bridge, a design so ingenious and easy to use that it has become the standard for the electric guitar industry. However, the most important feature of the Gibson Explorer guitar is definitely its 496R and 500T pickups. These double-coil humbuckers revolutionized the sounds of rock and heavy metal and have proved themselves time and time again to produce the most powerful, highest, energized tones ever heard coming from an electric guitar. The tones are also incredibly clean and crisp even when they are full of energy and sustained, a feature that is commonly wanted, but rarely given.

Amateur guitarists aren't the only ones that have realized the potential and power of the Gibson Explorer, in fact far from it. Many famous musicians have been known to play with Gibson Explorer guitars including “The Edge” from the band U2, Eric Clapton, David Grohl, Allen Collins from Lynyrd Skynyrd, and even Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. These musicians have utilized the Gibson Explorer's unique and strong sound to impress thousands of fans and show the world what the Explorers are capable of.

Although the Gibson Explorer is pricier than other guitars, based on all the collected facts about it, it is safe to say that it is worth the money and then some. No other guitar has come close to rivaling its amazing body, feel, style, and tone, and I have a feeling none ever will.
