Description for Gibson Firebird V Electric Guitar (with Case) There is no mistaking a Gibson Firebird V--with its unique "reversed" zig-zag body design and equally distinct headstock, it is simply one of the most recognizable of all guitar profiles. First introduced in 1963, the Gibson Firebird was the brainchild of legendary automotive designer and visionary Ray Dietrich (Lincoln, Packard), enlisted by Gibson to bolster the guitar lines of the early '60s and help solidify the company's eminent rank among solidbody electric guitar manufacturers. Dietrich's unconventional design was based loosely on both the legendary automobile tailfins of the 1950s and the Gibson Explorer, which had been introduced several years earlier. The Gibson Firebird V's Angled Headstock The Gibson Firebird V's distinct headstock stays true to Gibson's industry-changing way of thinking. Like every Gibson headstock, the angled Firebird headstock is carved out of the same piece of mahogany as the neck. The angle is carefully set to 14 degrees--instead of the traditional 17 degrees--to accommodate the headstock's radical contour and to keep pressure on the strings. The headstock's form insures straight string pull, which, when combined with the increased string pressure, means there is no loss of string vibration between the nut and the tuners, equaling better sustain. Banjo-styled tuners provide the Gibson Firebird V with the necessary clearance between tuner buttons, allowing for comfortable access and uncomplicated tuning. This process takes craftsmanship, time, and effort, but the rewards are certainly worth the effort. The Gibson Firebird V Neck Profile No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional '50s neck profile is the thicker, more rounded contour, emulating the neck shapes of Gibson's iconic models of the late 1950s. The '60s neck profile is considered the more modern, slim-tapered contour most commonly associated with the Gibson models of the early 1960s. The neck on Gibson's Firebird V has the best of both worlds--it is a hybrid between the '50s rounded contour and the '60s slim-taper profile. As with all Gibson necks, it is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. Once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest--including the final sanding--is done by hand. That means there are no two Gibson Firebird V necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel. High-Output, Ceramic Mini Humbuckers On the Gibson Firebird V The introduction of the mini humbucker in the late-1960s served a growing need--the demand for a P-90-sized pickup with no hum. Gibson's world-class engineers set about creating a smaller, more compact humbucker to fit into the slot of a P-90. With its smaller size, narrow magnetic field, and unique design combination, the mini humbucker produces a bright and focused output, while still retaining Gibson's famous humbucker performance. The mini humbucker was first made available in several Gibson-made Epiphone models of the late 1960s, and the Les Paul Deluxe in the early 1970s. Today, it is best known as the pickup in the Gibson Firebird, and is a vintage replica of the original mini humbucker with bar Alnico II magnets. The Gibson mini humbucker is authentic in every detail, from its cream-colored plastic mounting and coated enamel wire, to its maple spacers and vintage braided lead wire. The tone is unmistakable Gibson. Neck-Through-Body Construction and Solid Mahogany Body On the Gibson Firebird V The Firebird V's multiple-wood-ply construction is as structurally and aesthetically innovative as any Gibson feature. The neck and center piece of the body are constructed from solid mahogany, as are the two wings that are glued on to each side to form the Firebird's distinct outline. Gluing all the pieces together insures maximum 'wood-to-wood' contact, and allows the neck and body to function as a single unit. This neck-through-body construction results in better tone and unsurpassed sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks. The regimen involved in selecting the Firebird V's wood and the formula to dry it out is closely controlled. First, the wood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. These onsite inspectors also insure that the plain maple comes from corporations adhering to the forest-saving standards of the Rainforest Alliance, of which Gibson is a proud member and sponsor. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This insures all woods are dried to a level of 'equilibrium,' where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods' machinability and finishing properties, and adherence to glue. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson guitar will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory. The other part that makes this particular example pretty rare is the three-way toggle switch. Most of the Firebird Vs you see from this era have a black sliding pickup switch. But a few of them came with a three-way toggle switch, and this is one of them. We stop short of saying this guitar is 100% original for a couple of reasons. First, when you lift up the pickguard (which has the normal 10 screws for this Firebird pickguard) you will see that beside each hole in the body is another hole right next to it. We believe that at some point (for some unknown reason) someone changed out the pickguard (probably because the original pickguard shrunk). We can't be absolutely positive that this is the original pickguard, but it could be. We simply cannot be sure, and we aim to divulge everything we can about every instrument we sell. Therefore, you make up your mind on the issue with the pickguard and the extra holes. You can see them all clearly in the pictures below. Additionally, the original six-on-a-strip Kluson tuners have been replaced with sealed Grover tuners, which are slightly more stable and provide excellent, consistent tuning for any kind of music - especially ROCK N' ROLL!!! However, everything else on this beautiful Firebird seems to been absolutely original. The lyre vibrato is in incredible condition for its age. There is no hint of pitting anywhere on this guitar ... not the vibrato, not the original Tune-o-Matic bridge, not the mini humbucker covers, not the jack, NOTHING. The rosewood fingerboard is absolutely gorgeous, and plays as smooth as buttah! In a nutshell, this is one of the finest vintage Firebirds we've EVER run across, and it shows. Just look at all the pictures and judge for yourself. This instrument will not disappoint. And the price tag is just right, especially considering what some of these models go for in 100% original condition. This is a GREAT chance to pick up a rare guitar at a fabulous price. This Lot consists of a genuine Gibson Firebird in Vintage Sunburst and which was made in the USA. Going by the eight digit serial number it was made in 1990 (91680732). This number is stamped on the back of the headstock along with 'Made in USA', see 6th picture. I bought this s/h quite a few years ago and had it shipped over the pond. I had wanted one ever since seeing Johnny Winter use one in the 1960s and beyond and it was then the most amazing guitar I had ever seen. So unlike anything else and especially with it's reversed head stock. The body is mahogany and the through-neck is made up of a series of mahogany and walnut plies for strength. A neck with two wings if you like. It has large bango tuners, take a bit of getting used to, and the rosewood fretboard has trapezoid inlays and the neck has binding. The large white plastic scratchplate has a red etched fire bird motif . As far as I know the 2 humbuckler pickups are original and the sound/punch is not too unlike the sound from my Les Paul Standard. Perfectly playable and the action is very fast due to the frets being set low. Cosmetically there are marks and wear here and there but definately no abuse. Firebird will come in a new and modern heavily padded gig bag, especially made to fit the Gibson Explorer and the Firebird. Would also welcome personal pickup or arranged collection. It was manufactured in1980 and has all of its original hardware and finish. It’s had one owner since new.NB All images are of the actual listed item. Serial No: 81690012 The Gibson Firebird certainly has its place in the legacy of Gibson guitars. After having great success with the Les Paul in the 50's, Gibson's popularity began to dwindle in the 60's. This was due to Gibson's higher price tags, as well as fierce competition from rival guitar maker Fender. President of Gibson, Ted McCarty, decided to put an end to this and hired car designer Ray Dietrich to design a new guitar. Under Dietrich's supervision, the Gibson Firebird was born. The Firebird emulated the lines of the mid-50's car tailfins, taking the Explorer design and rounding the edges. Certainly an unusual aspect, the right-hand horn of the body is longer than the other, coining nickname "reverse". The Gibson Firebird was the first in the company's history to use a neck-thru construction. The neck is made up of five plies of mahogany with four narrow walnut strips for additional support. It also featured a reverse headstock and banjo tuners. As for electronics, it featured mini-humbuckers, some featuring Gibson's single coil P-90 pickup. The Gibson Firebird went on sale in 1963 with four models, differentiated by pickup and tailpiece configurations. The different models were designated by Roman numerals "I","III", "V" and "VII". In 1965, the first "non-reverse" model Gibson Firebird was released to help spike sales. After a few years, the "non-reverse" line was dropped. "Reverse" Gibson Firebirds were reissued in 1972, including a "Bicentennial" model released in 1976. It seems I'm becoming the neighborhoods instrument dealer so here is the next one from a couple blocks over. 1976 (78?) Gibson Firebird Bicentennial. I did some research about Gibson Serial Numbers and am a bit conflicted but a collector I know told me Gibson serial numbers are a science for itself. If I go by what I found online this is a 1978 made in Kalamazoo, MI. If I go by the vintage guitar guide it's a 1976 since in the book it says only in 1976 did they carry the red white and blue logo which this one has, what they call the bicentennial edition. I'm selling this for the original owner but he was in his 40s when he bought it so he doesn't remember the exact year and therefore isn't much help. He has a lot of instruments. Either way, the guitar is sold as is, no returns whatsoever for any reasons. Just be aware you are buying something that may be a 76 or a 78...or for all we know a 77? I just can't make any promises about the year or if its all original. Regardless of the exact year, this ax has tons of Mojo and sounds incredible through the handwired Vox AC-15 I tried it through to male sure it works. To the instrument itself. It is in absolutely great condition for its age. A couple little nicks which I tried to capture with the camera. It's plenty dusty as you can see since it has sat around for a long time so it currently is as Elderly instruments in Lansing, Mi for a setup/tune-up so you will be getting a play ready guitar. Neck is straight and frets have plenty of life left. The only noticeable flaw i see when looking directly at is that it has some wear below the high E string. If the guy played like crazy with a pick or what happened there, I don't know. I'm a bass player and don't use a pick so I'm unaware what damage they can do or if this is a common pick damage spot. The hardshell case checks out for the era. All other parts I don't know about/I can't tell. While mini humbuckers were mostly used, Gibson used a lot of different parts on instruments in the time before moving operations from Michigan to Nashville, hence it being hard to determine if its been modified or not (Jim is very old and couldn't answer the question). It's in good playing and cosmetical shape, the rest is for its Jew owner to figure out so bid away my friends. Again, sold as is. No returns if you discover a screw or other part isn't original. Vintage guitar guide for 2012 has this listed for $2700-3200 for a bicentennial. I see them selling for crazy amounts on Ebay. Im gonna try it as a fixed price auction for now with best offer option so I'm open to serious offers. I will ship worldwide, fully insured, but please don't ask me to lie on the customs form. It will say the sale price on the customs form!!! Also, some countries are limited to a $650 insurance maximum by the US Postal Service so I will insure the guitar for the sale price or the maximum allowed. There are no breaks or repairs and it has just been deep cleaned, waxed, set up and it plays very nicely. No smokey odors or funky mods. It has been played and has some light indents and some pickmarks on the pickguard. There's a small chip on the headstock. The screw to the trem arm looks non-original, but it is fully functional. The neck strap button has some old adhesive around it- it should some off without too much trouble. The pickups are original, as is the factory coil splitter. The frets are in very good condition and there's no buckle rash- just some very light, clear coat surface scratches. Now Gibson USA introduces the Firebird Studio, a guitar with all the eye-catching style and flair of the original 1965-'69 "Non-Reverse" bodied Firebird III, enhanced with added sonic versatility to bolster its vintage-certified tones. Crafted from Grade-A tonewoods, loaded with three of Gibson's amazing new Tapped P-90 pickups for both original fat P-90 tones and brighter, snappier "narrow single-coil" tones, and upgraded with stunning new five-way pickup switching, push-pull tap and phase switching, and a Tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece, this is arguably the fiercest Firebird ever created. Mahogany has a long and storied history as a Gibson tonewood, and it forms the core of the Firebird Studio from Gibson USA.
