Gibson SG Specials offer a great balance of features and value for the working guitarist.Like the Gibson SG Standard before it this SG Speicial set a new standard in how to bring great guitars to the market at an affordable price. The Special SGs run about 30 to 40 percent less expensive than the Standards but still plack plenty of that classic SG tone. The Special uses uncovered 490b and 490t pickups which creates a slightly more open sound. These pickups sound more mellow than the 498t pickups found in the Standard SG.
SG Specials also typically have dot inlays instead of the trapezoid pearl inlays on the fret board. The neck features a 50's rounded profile and is still set into the body not bolted on. The SG Special is nice because it brings Gibson quality to the masses at a price that people can afford and it still looks great. The new Faded series of SGs takes costs even lower by staining the mahogany body instead of applying lacquer. The SG Special is the guitar I still play most till this day and holds a "Special" place in my heart.
